Every day, more people are becoming better educated about water safety and seeking solutions that will ensure their home’s water is clean and tastes great. With growing awareness and governmental actions on forever chemicals in the United States, a variety of water treatment devices have quickly become common household necessities. However, the rise in demand for these systems has also opened a new door for water scammers looking to take advantage of homeowners.
Unfortunately, there are fly-by-night companies in Florida and Georgia that sell poor-quality water treatment systems, who will often disappear after they make the sale, leaving no further customer support or maintenance support. There are even some water filtration products being sold by companies who don’t offer repair services or maintenance at all! The question is, how can you be sure if a water treatment provider is legitimate or a bad decision better to avoid?
Here are some of our best tips and questions to ask about the quality and reliability of a water treatment product and service provider.
How Do I Recognize A Water Scam?
Firstly, you should research the company’s reputation and history. Look up reviews on Google, see how long the product has been on the market, and check out the company’s business rating with the Better Business Bureau. Ask the representative what services they provide after the sale and be sure to find out what their product warranty includes.

How Do I Judge The Product Quality?
Over the years, you’ve probably heard of a lot of different types of water softeners, reverse osmosis filtration products, and whole-home water treatment systems. You can go to any home improvement store and find dozens of DIY products that promise great-tasting, clean water. So, what factors really contribute to a high-quality water softener or drinking water filter, and how should you rate them against each other to get the best return from your investment? Read our blog, Investing in a Home Water Treatment System, to see how we compare the water processing industry’s three tiers of equipment quality.
Is A Free In-Home Water Test A Scam?
No! Getting your home’s water tested is honestly the best way to find out what’s in it. And all it takes is a few minutes at your kitchen sink. UDI offers a free water test performed by one of our technicians. With just a little bit of tap water and a few quick tests, our technician can report your home’s water quality and then explain what type of water processor will best address your concerns. The free water test should come with no obligation to buy.
Are Any Water Processing Systems Government Approved?
Some water scammers claim that certain government agencies have required or recommended the widespread use of their water purification system. While the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has recently taken a number of initiatives in efforts to protect American communities from harmful exposure to forever chemicals (PFAS) in water, as of now, the government does not endorse any particular water treatment company or product. If you see an EPA registration number on a water purification product label, it simply means that the manufacturer has registered its product with the EPA – it does not mean the EPA has tested or endorsed the product.
However, the EPA does agree that “high-pressure membranes, such as nanofiltration or reverse osmosis, have been extremely effective at removing PFAS. Research shows that these types of membranes are typically more than 90 percent effective at removing a wide range of PFAS, including shorter chain PFAS.” That’s why one of the best products to consider is the ULTRA-6® reverse osmosis system.
